About Rebecca

Dr. Rebecca Boehm Shaffer has had a robust musical career filled with teaching, performing, and writing. Her career began while growing up in northern Wisconsin. As a passionate young musician, she learned the fundamentals of horn playing from the legendary Philip Farkas. Dr. Boehm Shaffer earned her Master of Music in Horn Performance from the University of Wisconsin at Madison where she studied with Douglas Hill. She earned a Doctorate in Horn Performance and Pedagogy with a secondary emphasis in Music History from the University of Northern Colorado where she studied with Jack Herrick. Additional studies were completed with David Jolley, Jerry Folsom and Dr. Julius Erlenbach and she was coached by Marcel Moyse at the Moyse Chamber Music Seminars.
For the last seven years, Dr. Boehm Shaffer has taught horn at Luther College. From her first day, Dr. Boehm Shaffer has increased the size and quality of the Horn Studio. Since 2013, Dr. Boehm Shaffer had the pleasure of coaching and advising the Golden Tones, Luther College’s first female brass quintet. She also teaches ear training and brass methods courses.
As an extensive freelancer, Dr. Boehm Shaffer has performed with various ensembles across the country. These ensembles include the San Diego Symphony, the Utah Symphony, the Fort Collins Symphony Orchestra, the Cheyenne Symphony, the Greeley Philharmonic, the Fort Collins Opera, the Fort Collins Ballet, and the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra. In addition to an active orchestral career, Dr. Boehm Shaffer has performed in many commercial recordings, including spots for ABC Sports, the NCAA, and others. She has performed with many artists including Robert Shaw, Tony Bennett, Metallica, Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra Jr., and Manhattan Steamroller.
Dr. Boehm Shaffer is fortunate to have had many opportunities to engage with the Horn Community. During the Fall of 2016, she was a Guest Artist and Master Class presenter at the Horn Days Workshop at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Along with her colleagues in the Norse Brass she performed a recital and gave a presentation on brass quintet literature for the high school brass quintet at the Iowa Bandmasters Association convention. Dr. Boehm Shaffer presented Injuries of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand and the hornist at the International Horn Symposium MidNorth Workshop. Additionally, she conducted the the Luther College Horn Ensemble performance at MidNorth. In 2014, Dr. Boehm Shaffer was a Guest Artist for the Fall Horn Festival at the University of Wisconsin at Whitewater. Where she performed, presented on jazz horn, and conducted two horn ensembles. In 2008, she conducted the University horn ensemble at the International Horn Symposium in Denver.
Dr. Boehm Shaffer’s enthusiasm for horn ensemble lead her to become a published author. The Guide to Horn Ensemble Repertoire , (2008) became the first reference book for hornists navigating the expansive terrain of horn repertoire. Currently, she is co-authoring a brass methods field guide for students and teachers (Linus Books, Fall 2017).
